Training Camp Observations

Training Camp observations from the 3rd day at The Greenbrier

David Njoku joins practice for the first time in training camp and Browns ran through 7-on-7 red zone drills

TC Observations Day 3

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va – Under the partly cloudy skies in the mountains of West Virginia, the Browns took to the practice fields for the third day of training camp.

Here are the top observations and notes from the third day of training camp.

David Njoku practices

TE David Njoku was out on the practice field with the rest of the tight ends during individual drills after working on the side during the first two days of practice. Njoku and the tight ends went through a pass-catching drill with a member of the coaching staff serving as a defender guarding them.

Then, as the tight ends and wide receivers went through a drill with the quarterbacks, QB Deshaun Watson connected with Njoku for a pass downfield.

7-on-7 red zone

The Browns spent a portion of practice working in the red zone. On the first rep of the period, Watson connected with WR Elijah Moore who ran into the end zone. Over the course of the period, he also connected with WR David Bell in the end zone, found Njoku in the back of the end zone for a completion and threw a pass to RB John Kelly Jr. who ran the ball into the end zone.

QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson also took a few reps during the 7-on-7 period. On his reps, he connected with WR Michael Woods II in the back of the end zone who stayed in bounds, as well as also finding WR Matt Landers in the back of the end zone.

Yet, the defense also had their own moments as well. S Grant Delpit broke up a pass intended for TE Jordan Akins in the end zone. DB Tony Brown II had another pass breakup against Moore in the end zone.

11-on-11 period

For the second consecutive day, Watson also threw during the 11-on-11 period of practice. He's thrown in all three days of training camp as he continues his progression from the shoulder injury he sustained in the 2023 season.

During the 11-on-11 period, Watson connected once again with Njoku who caught the pass with a defender on him. Watson also found WR Amari Cooper running down the sideline for the completion.

DE Myles Garrett – who is still ramping up from a hamstring injury earlier in the offseason – was on the field with the defense during some of the reps of 11-on-11.

Kickoff return and field goal work

The Browns also used a portion of practice to work on kickoff returns, with K Dustin Hopkins and K Cade York practicing the kickoffs. WR Ahmarean Brown and RB Pierre Strong Jr. were two of the players in the backfield serving as kickoff returners.

Then, as practiced wrapped for the day, Hopkins and York spent time working on field goal attempts. They each lined up for attempts at the 30-, 35- and 40-yard lines, both making each of their attempts.

Other notes

  • CB Denzel Ward and Martin Emerson Jr. spent some time off to the side with cornerbacks coach Brandon Lynch and defensive quality control coach Jeff Anderson, focusing on defending in one-on-one situations.
  • T Jedrick Wills Jr. was out at practice for the first time in training camp, working off to the side with the group of players. Wills is listed on the active/PUP list as he continues to work back from his knee injury that he suffered during the 2023 season.
  • While Garrett continues his ramp up period, he is still present among the defensive line to help provide mentorship and leadership. While the defensive line worked on a drill focused on getting around an offensive lineman and attacking the quarterback, Garrett simulated the snap to initiate the start of the play.
