Training Camp Observations: QB Jameis Winston looks sharp ahead of preseason start

HC Kevin Stefanski announced QB Deshaun Watson would not play Saturday

TC Observations Day 10

As tornado sirens blared across northeast Ohio, the Browns made the necessary decision to move their 10th training camp practice indoors.

Before practice began, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced that QB Deshaun Watson – who still practiced Tuesday – would not be playing in Saturday’s preseason matchup against the Packers.

With QB Jameis Winston set to make his first start as Cleveland Brown this weekend, here are today's top observations from training camp.

Winston looks sharp ahead of Saturday's game

Winston, who has nine years of NFL experience, efficiently led the offense Tuesday afternoon in the indoor facility at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus. The former No. 1 overall pick connected with his receivers for three touchdowns throughout multiple 11-on-11 periods.

His first came on a long bomb to WR Jaelon Darden, who beat his man, caught the ball in stride and waltzed into the end zone.

On Winston's next turn under center, he found WR Cedric Tillman on a similar play – with the same result. Tillman threw his hands up and celebrated after sprinting to the end zone for a 50-yard touchdown.

Later, in a red zone drill, Winston led a touchdown drive capped off with a pass to TE Treyton Welch.

"I think when you spend time with Jameis, you definitely get a sense for the type of energy he brings," Stefanski said in April. "A very positive energy – whether it's in the building, in the weight room, in the hallway, in the meeting rooms. He's somebody that is constantly wanting to get to the bottom of what we're doing from a playbook standpoint. Really impressed with what Jameis is going to bring to this football team."

Martin Emerson Jr. continues strong camp

CB Martin Emerson Jr. has shined at Browns training camp so far, and Tuesday was no exception.

The third-year player out of Mississippi State broke on a ball from Watson intended for WR Amari Cooper and sprinted to the end zone for a pick six, celebrating with his teammates.

The battles between Emerson and the Browns receivers have impressed Stefanski so far, enough to the point that he texted Emerson after a particularly great play against WR Jerry Jeudy earlier in camp.

"I saw a great rep [Sunday] with Jerry on the outside with [Emerson]," Stefanski said before practice Monday. "[Emerson] covered him really well, I shot him a text after I was watching that it was outstanding. So, he pushes the receivers, the receivers push him, and it only makes you better."

Emerson started 12 games last season, leading all Browns defensive backs with four interceptions, adding 59 total tackles and 14 passes defensed. The young player joined CB Denzel Ward in Florida for an offseason workout.

"Really him just wanting to learn and come up underneath me and just see everything I do," Ward said early in training camp. "He's been working hard and looking forward to seeing him this year."

Myles Garrett shows top-tier effort

It shouldn't be surprising that reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year DE Myles Garrett has wowed in camp despite only returning to team drills earlier this week.

On Emerson's pick six, Garrett blew through the line of scrimmage to pressure Watson into making an errant throw. A few plays later, Garrett tore down field to chase down a running back, covering 20 yards before coming up with the "tackle."

When asked about lining up next to Garrett, DT Quinton Jefferson could only laugh.

"He's a freak," Jefferson said. "I've been around some special guys. He has crazy work ethic … But like, his talent is … I've never seen anything like it. A guy that big, moving that fast, can bend like he can and not only is he a freak, but he's intelligent, super high football IQ."

The Browns will take Wednesday off before returning to the practice field on Thursday ahead of their Saturday preseason game against Green Bay.
