Wyatt Teller heads to injured reserve | News & Notes

Browns could look to establish the run against the Raiders run defense

News&Notes 9.25

The Browns will look to bounce back from a tough loss at home in Week 3 as they prepare to travel to Las Vegas and face the Raiders in Week 4. Cleveland is currently 1-0 on the road and will look to add another win to its record against a Raiders team who also lost in Week 3 to the Panthers.

"Going on the road, AFC opponent in Las Vegas," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "Spent a lot of time watching them the last couple of days. Talented football team, so we have to have a great week of preparation. And that's where it starts for us, is worry about our preparation."

Here are the top pieces of news and notes as the Browns head into Week 4 against the Raiders.

Wyatt Teller to IR

The Browns announced on Wednesday that RG Wyatt Teller would be placed on injured reserve. Teller sustained the knee injury during Week 3 against the Giants.

"A huge loss for us," QB Deshaun Watson said. "Wyatt is a pro's pro. He gives everything each and every day he comes. He works each and every week. He goes full throttle for us, whether he's banged up or not. And he just knows exactly how to play that guard position. He helps out with all the guys up front, helps out with me. He goes to the final whistle. He's a beast. So, definitely going to miss Wyatt."

As a subsequent move to add depth to the offensive line, the Browns signed T Germain Ifedi to the active roster. Ifedi was on the Browns' practice squad and was elevated for Week 1 and Week 2 of the regular season.

"His ability to always be ready as a professional since he's walked in the building," offensive line coach Andy Dickerson said on Sept. 20. "He's a vet. He's played a lot of football, played at tackle, played at guard and his ability to go in and not blink and be able to execute and contribute and be available has been awesome. So again, asking questions, you see the grittiness and his strain to finish. So, I think it's just been a great addition to the room."

Other injury updates

The Browns are also dealing with other injuries to key offensive linemen like LT Jedrick Wills Jr., LT James Hudson III and RT Jack Conklin. Wills and Conklin did not practice on Wednesday. However, Hudson and RT Dawand Jones – who is dealing with a knee injury – practiced on Wednesday.

"(Jones) has to work through it and see if he's able to go this week," Stefanski said. "But he's had some good moments for us this season when healthy, so we'll try to get him as healthy as we can."

While TE David Njoku did not practice on Wednesday, Stefanski is not ruling Njoku out for Week 4 against the Raiders yet. He said Njoku will do some work this week. Njoku has missed the last two games with an ankle injury he sustained in Week 1.

DE Myles Garrett did not practice on Wednesday, as he was listed as dealing with foot, thigh and Achilles injuries. Stefanski said Garrett sustained the thigh and Achilles injuries during Week 3 against the Giants, after he was already dealing with the foot injury.

"I feel like Myles is determined to continue to play," Stefanski said. "He's working through injuries like a lot of guys, and he's played through injuries in his past. But of course, you would make smart decisions with your players."

Importance of establishing the run

As the Browns prepare for their Week 4 matchup, they have another opportunity to establish the run game against a Raiders run defense that has struggled this season.

The Raiders run defense has given up over 100 rushing yards in all three of their games this season, averaging 152.7 rushing yards allowed – which ranks 29th in the NFL. They've given up a total of 458 rushing yards on 85 carries.

While the Browns have struggled to establish the run game consistently in two of their three games this season, their ability to run the ball could play a role in their success against Las Vegas. The Browns are averaging 95.7 rushing yards per game, which ranks 24th in the NFL.

"I think, obviously, getting on track as an offense is a very big goal of ours going into any game," Stefanski said. "The run game I think it's important for us to be efficient as an offense and be explosive when available to us. But it's certainly an emphasis for us."
