The Browns claimed their first divisional win this season after they beat the Ravens 29-24 in Week 8 and broke a five-game losing streak.
They now sit at 2-6 on the season and look to build off their success in Week 8 as they begin preparation for Week 9 to host the Chargers.
"I like how we work," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "I like how we come into the building. We own that record, but we don't bring that record with us when we go into meetings or go out onto the practice field. The way this team works, we understand that it's not easy. It's going to be hard. But I like that about this football team."
Here are the top pieces of news and other notes heading into Week 9.
Injury Updates
Stefanski said LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who sustained a neck injury in Week 8 against the Ravens, has been released from the hospital. Stefanski confirmed that Owusu-Koramoah was walking.
"Very happy that he is doing better," Stefanski said. "Jeremiah is playing at an extremely high level. And even in that game, the plays he was making, running around. It's tough when you see a teammate go through that. That's scary. That's not fun for anybody involved to watch that."
Owusu-Koramoah was injured in the final minute of the third quarter after a collision with RB Derrick Henry. Owusu-Koramoah was carted off the field and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The Browns announced late Sunday night that Owusu-Koramoah was taken to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and remained in the hospital overnight for observation as a precaution.
"It hurt all of us," S Juan Thornhill said. "You had guys that were very emotional when they saw that he went down. JOK is a leader of our defense, you know, like he's a guy that's going to make a lot of plays. He's that spark fight defense. And losing a guy like that, it hurts. That's our brother. You never want to see anybody go down like that. But everybody out there, they're going to play hard for them each and every week, until he gets back out there. And I'm praying for my boy."
Stefanski also announced that CB Denzel Ward is in the concussion protocol after suffering a concussion in Week 8. Ward has sustained six concussions over his NFL career.

Jameis Winston is Browns starting quarterback
After QB Jameis Winston led the Browns to a 29-24 win over the Ravens, Stefanski confirmed on Monday that Winston will be their starting quarterback.
"I thought he did a nice job with progressions," Stefanski said. "I thought he saw it clearly. And a big part of that, his protection was outstanding. […] And that allowed Jameis to get through his progressions and even third, fourth progression so that guys could come open."
In his first start with the Browns – and his first start in two seasons – Winston completed 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns. He finished with a quarterback rating of 115.3.
His performance in Week 8 marked his 29th career 300-yard passing game, as well as his first game with at least three touchdown passes since totaling five on Sept. 12, 2021. Winston's 334 passing yards were also the most in a player's first start with the Browns since the team returned in 1999.
"The guy played lights out, if I'm being honest," Thornhill said of Winston's first game. "He definitely played a great game. I was just watching, just wanted to see how he was going to play, how he was going to operate out there. He did a great job putting the team on his on his back. Dropping back, just watching him go through his progression, finding second, third option. He gave us a win and helped us win."

Improved quarterback protection
One area that the Browns also saw improvement in Week 8 came in their protection of the quarterback. They limited the Ravens pass rush to two sacks and a 25.6 quarterback pressure percentage. That protection gave Winston time in the pocket to find his open pass catchers and make plays.
Stefanski was pleased with the protection over the course of the game, which gave Winston opportunities to throw the ball.
Stefanski said it was the first time they've use that particular lineup – starting Dawand Jones at left tackle, alongside the return of Wyatt Teller at right guard. In eight games this season, the Browns have started seven different offensive line combinations due to injuries at each position.
"The quarterback and offensive line are always working in concert when you're talking about protection," Stefanksi said. "And even the receivers have a piece of this because they need to get open in time. So, it's really an 11-man protection plan."
However, Stefanski also said the tight ends and running backs helped play a critical role in the protection plan as well.
"Some of the tight end's chips that they were using before going out in routes and the running backs holding up in protections versus a team that blitzes quite a bit," Stefanski said. "And I thought, in particular, Nick (Chubb) in that last drive did a nice job versus some pressure. I think it was a bunch of guys just executing the protection plan."
