Steelers preparing to face new-look Browns offense | What They're Saying

The Steelers are 8-2 and lead the AFC North headed into Thursday Night Football

Browns Steelers What They're Saying Week 12

The Browns and Steelers will face off on Thursday Night Football after a short week of practice. Both teams played on Sunday of Week 11, meaning each team had just three days to prepare for the divisional game.

For the Steelers, evaluating the Browns offense has been a challenge as QB Jameis Winston has just three starts on film for the Browns. Winston took over as the Browns starting quarterback after QB Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 7 against the Bengals.

Additionally, offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey took over play calling responsibilities in Week 8, giving the Steelers limited tape to work from when game planning for the Browns.

"I'm really just trying to get a sense of what does Ken Dorsey as the primary play caller mean. How is it different?" head coach Mike Tomlin said on Monday. "We've got to familiarize ourselves with that tandem (Winston and Dorsey) and how they work and what does that mean to their schematics and personality on offense."

One familiar aspect of the Browns offense for the Steelers is RB Nick Chubb, who Tomlin respectfully referred to as "Mr. Chubb."

Chubb has 717 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in his 10 career games against the Steelers. In his most recent game against the Steelers, in Week 2 of the 2023 season, Chubb suffered a serious knee injury that ended his 2023 season.

"Mr. Chubb, first and foremost, just have so much respect for his game and his body of work and his capabilities," Tomlin said. "From an appreciator of football standpoint, it's really good to see him back. But from a guy that competes against him this week, obviously he has our attention."

Chubb has 163 yards on 53 carries this season since returning in Week 8, adding a rushing touchdown.

Unlike Chubb, the Steelers will face an unfamiliar foe in WR Jerry Jeudy, who will play his first game against the Steelers as a member of the Browns. Jeudy has 18 receptions for 294 yards and a touchdown in the three games Winston has started at quarterback. He had an 89-yard touchdown reception against the Saints, showcasing his ability to be an explosive receiver.

Jeudy leads a receiving corps that poses threats to the Steelers secondary from each position on the field. WR Cedric Tillman has 16 receptions for 221 yards and three touchdowns since Winston became the starting quarterback. Slot receiver Elijah Moore has 17 receptions for 179 yards and a score in the same timeframe.

"Jeudy is new to them but he's not new to the NFL. He's coming off of a really big game," Tomlin said. "They acquired Moore from the Jets last year and he's a top-notch slot receiver. There's been some strong development in Tillman on the outside and I think his growth and development is probably the central reason why they were comfortable moving on from (WR Amari) Cooper at the trade deadline."

On the defensive side of the ball, Tomlin and the Steelers are ready to face a defense that held them to just 10 points in their last meeting in Week 11 of the 2023 season.

DE Myles Garrett is at the top of the Steeler's list of concerns when facing the Browns defense, as the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year has seven sacks on the season, tied for the 12th-most in the NFL.

"He's a game wrecker," Tomlin said. "You get in one-dimensional moments, you better be real solid there. It's not possible that he's going to impact the game, it's probable in those circumstances. We're highly familiar with that."

As they look to slow Garrett down, Tomlin was asked about the Steelers tackles' ability to block him one-on-one. The Steelers head coach gave a candid answer on their plan to stop Garrett, which involves multiple blockers attempting to contain the Browns defensive end.

"I don't know if we view that as a one-on-one matchup, to be quite honest with you," Tomlin said. "And that's no slight against (LT) Dan Moore, it's just the talent level of Myles Garrett. I think if you identify any tackle and match him up with Myles Garrett, it's not possible that he's going to get home, it's probable. Particularly if it's in a one-dimensional circumstance."

Garrett isn't the only game wrecker on the Browns defensive line. On the interior, DT Dalvin Tomlinson has continued to show his ability to both affect the passer from the inside as well as serve as an elite run stopper.

Through the Browns' first 10 games, Tomlinson ranks ninth in ESPN’s defensive tackle run stop win rate rankings with a run stop win rate of 41 percent. He also has three sacks and four tackles for loss this season.

"Tomlinson is a big-time run stopper and interior guy who's also providing some top-notch interior pocket push for them," Tomlin said. "Their interior games have been eye-opening. They've gotten some pressure and gotten home some and when they collapse the pocket in that way, they just make it easier for guys like Myles Garrett on the edge to get home as well."

Steelers QB Russell Wilson is familiar with both Tomlinson and Garrett as well as the rest of the Cleveland defense, having faced them in Week 12 of the 2023 season with the Broncos.

Wilson was sacked just once by LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah but gained a respect for the Jim Schwartz-coached group.

"They're physical, they fly around, they do a great job," Wilson said. "They're really well-coached. Coach Schwartz does a great job coaching them up. They're just such a talented group. And they're going to make some plays here and there, you have to understand that."
