Pregame Notes:
Rootstown and Kirtland meet for a chance to advance to the Division VI state Final Four in the Ohio High School Football Playoffs.
Rootstown, led by the 2017 OHSAA Division IV Coach of the Year Mark Geis, comes into Friday's game confident after winning 35-6 last week against Norwayne. The Rovers are led by a strong rushing attack featuring RB Caleb Kaut, who was the 2017 Division IV Offensive Player of the Year. On the year, Kaut has eclipsed the 2,000 yard mark and has scored 34 touchdowns. Rootstown has a stout defense as well; the defense is fortified by the defensive player of the year, linebacker Nathan Moore. Moore has 170 tackles and 21 tackles for loss. The Rovers will look to establish the run game, control the clock, and stop the run.
Coach Tiger Laverde is attempting to lead Kirtland back to the state final four, after having their streak of five straight state appearances snapped last year. The Hornets have a high-powered offense lead by two junior runningbacks, Jake Neibecker and Joey Torok. Neibecker has rushed for 1,226 yards, 18 TDs, and Joey Torok has rushed for 1,197 yards, 15 TDs. The Hornets will look to control the line-of-scrimmage by running the ball and playing solid defense.
Both teams will look to control the line of scrimmage by the running the ball effectively. This should be a great Regional Final game.
Good luck to both teams and stay tuned for a post-game report.
