Pregame Notes:
There will be more than one thing shining Friday night at Elyria High School's Ely Stadium. The Pioneers' brand new artificial turf field will be under the lights for the first time at the Ely Stadium complex. The Elyria High school Pioneers will face the Avon Lake Shoreman at 7 p.m. in the opening day matchup of high school football.
Coming off a 1-9 season in 2017, Coach Sean Arno, the Pioneer's head football coach, is excited for his young players to step on the new field for the first time tomorrow night. Last year's team was led by Sr. QB Tristan Arno, who threw for more than 250 yards in the season opener, as well as Sr. running back Keshaun Glover. This year's team boast a bunch of young talent that is eager to turn the program into a winner.
Avon Lake, 6-4 (5-4 Conference), led by head coach Matt Kostelnik, is eager to finish what they started in 2017. The Shoreman nearly missed the playoffs in 2017 after losing their final two games by a combined five points. The 2018 team returns nine offensive starters including quarterback Jack Mikolich who led the team in passing with 1,650 yards. Running back Konner Riggs also returns after rushing for 1,172 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2017.
Last year's game Elyria at Avon Lake was a nail bitter. Avon Lake defeated Elyria 21-20. Let us hope for another great game this year.
Good luck to both teams and stay tuned for a post-game report.
