The Browns have a new starting left tackle as they move into the second half of the season with Dawand Jones.
Jones – who previously played at right tackle and started five games at right tackle this season – started his second game at left tackle in Week 9. He'll stay on the left side moving forward when the Browns come out of the bye week and face the Saints in Week 11.
"I do plan on keeping him there," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "He's a young player that's going to continue to get better. It's not perfect. There are things he can get better at, but I do believe leaving him there and letting him develop there is the best thing."
Jones has played at left tackle before during his collegiate career. He started one game at Ohio State at left tackle and played a majority of his freshman and sophomore seasons on the left side. He shifted to the right side and started all 13 games of the 2022 season at right tackle.
Jones has also stepped into a starting position before. During his rookie season in 2023, Jones moved into the starting right tackle position after RT Jack Conklin sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 1. He started nine games and played in 11 total before he sustained his own knee injury that placed him on injured reserve.

Heading into his second NFL season, Jones started the first five games of the season at right tackle as Conklin continued to work his way back and return to the field. He then served as a backup in Week 6 and 7 before earning his first start at left tackle in Week 8 against the Ravens.
"I thought he did a pretty good job for his first start," offensive line coach Andy Dickerson said. "There's always going to be things to get better at. And it was good to see him work through the process during the course of the week, and then get out there. The key coaching points and different things that you go through, and just the reminders of trying to stay square, using his hands, just good reminders. But you do the same thing if he was on the right. But for him, as you continue to go to be able to play both sides, it's muscle memory. There is something to get used to doing, but that's why you try as much as possible get those guys just even in drills, if you're flipping your hips and moving around, just to get that feel."
Even as Jones bounced around from being in the starting lineup, to not starting for two consecutive weeks and then switching to the left side, Dickerson saw how Jones continued to ask questions in their meetings. He would ask questions about coverages or ask to play a certain part of the film back so he could watch it again. He still prepared for each game and was attentive throughout to stay ready for his opportunity.
C Ethan Pocic noticed how Jones put in extra work throughout the week leading up to Week 9, including extra cardio and conditioning, to help him prepare for his second start on the left side.
"He did good," Pocic said. "He's getting more comfortable over there. I don't think he played very much left tackle in his life, so just good to see him get in more of a groove over there."

Following his second start against the Chargers, Jones attributed his improvement to T Jedrick Wills Jr., who has helped him throughout the process of adjusting to the left side. Jones has watched Wills' and other left tackle's sets, and he's been able to translate what he's watched to the past two games.
Wills had been the Browns starting left tackle since 2020, starting 53 games before he sustained a knee injury in Week 9 of the 2023 season and was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 7, 2023. Wills underwent arthroscopic knee surgery that was considered a success and was out for a remainder of the season.
He worked his way back and took the field for the first time this season in Week 3 against the Giants. He suffered a knee injury in Week 3 and missed Week 4, before he returned for Week 5 and started the next three games. Wills was inactive for Week 9 against the Chargers.
Even as Jones takes on a new role, Stefanski said Wills must stay ready to step in, if necessary, as a swing tackle.
"I'm just trying to put Dawand out there and let him get better," Stefanski said. "Jed is still a player that we believe in, and right now he's got to be ready to go. […] He's somebody that has played a lot of football for us. We have confidence in him. But in this case, he's the swing tackle, and he has to be ready to go in and at a moment's notice, and he will be."
