QB Jameis Winston doesn't believe in coincidences.
That's why, before the Browns hosted the Steelers on Thursday Night Football in Week 12, Winston shared a short and simple message with RB Nick Chubb.
"Before this game, I told Nick, I said, 'I got you today,'" Winston recalled. "I know how important this was for him. And we ain't going to talk about last year. Y'all all know the gig. But I'm so grateful and happy that I was able to see a smile on his face after that sweet victory against this team."
Just 14 months ago, Chubb sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 2 of the 2023 season against the Steelers in Pittsburgh. He was carted off the field, evaluated both at the stadium and at a local hospital and traveled back to Cleveland.
It began a year-long recovery process – which required two separate knee surgeries to repair the medial capsule, meniscus and medical collateral ligament (MCL), as well as his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) – and a lengthy rehabilitation process for him to take the field for the first time in Week 7 against the Bengals this season.
And while his return to the field in Week 7 – in which he scored a rushing touchdown – was significant on its own, facing the Steelers on Thursday Night Football held a different magnitude.
"It meant a lot to me," DE Myles Garrett said. "I know it means a lot to him. He won't say it, but it's true, I'll say it. This time last year, we were sick to our stomachs, and it hurt to have his family hurting, having to see that. For him to deal with all that, had to go through that kind of recovery, that mental obstacle. Not knowing what your future is and how long it's going to take to get back. There was just so much in the air. For him to come back and be pivotal in this game, it just speaks to the kind of resilience and the man that he is, and we absolutely love him."

Chubb, who passed 50 career touchdowns with his first touchdown of the game against the Steelers, finished Week 12 with 59 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He has 12 career games with at least two rushing touchdowns.
In his five games this season, Chubb has also recorded 222 rushing yards and three rushing scores – with 51 total touchdowns in his career, the third most in Browns history.
His first touchdown of the day came in the second quarter after the Browns marched down the field and into the red zone. He took the handoff from Winston and found a hole in the middle to punch in the touchdown with four minutes left in the first half.
Then, as the Browns were down by one point with 1:01 left in the game, Chubb took another handoff from Winston and once again ran up the middle into the end zone to give the Browns a 24-19 lead.
"I've run out of superlatives for Nick, honestly, and he's my favorite player on the team. You can tell everybody else has said that," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "But Nick does the right thing all the time and to see what he's gone through to come back and put himself where he is, just to be back playing in the first place and then to be back out there and performing like he's performing, scoring for this football team when we need him the most. He's a special, special player, but he's a great person."

As Chubb continues to play more snaps and games this season, his teammates and coaches are seeing the progression of his rhythm and comfort level in the offense. He's finding his spots in the run game and having an impact in moving the offense down the field.
WR Elijah Moore said that even though Chubb hasn't necessarily had a breakout game yet this season, his continued progression in the offense is a positive sign. Moore said they witness Chubb's work daily at practice and in the weight room, and his efforts are contagious to those on all three sides of the ball.
RB Jerome Ford agreed. He's seen the resilience of Chubb ever since the injury in 2023, and how he's worked his way back to being back out on the field. Ford said they have seen Chubb in the weight room each day getting a workout in, starting as soon as he was cleared to be in the gym following his injury all the way through the present.
"I've been his biggest fan," Ford said. "Like I told him earlier, if I could, I probably would have started the Chubb chants in the stands. But unfortunately, I wasn't able to. Every time he touched the field, I probably would have started the 'Chubb' chants."
The Browns feel Chubb's presence on all three sides of the ball, from his impact on the field to the sentiment of fans in the stands. They feed off the energy from the cheers when Chubb is introduced to the chants of his name throughout the game, and witness how much he means to the city of Cleveland.
"Nick is the face of the Cleveland Browns," Moore said. "So, anytime that he gets to finish the moment is something that I think everybody wants."
