The reigning Defensive Player of the Year had three sacks in the first half of Thursday Night Football

Before the Browns took the field against the Steelers on Thursday Night Football, DE Myles Garrett – the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and a team captain – addressed the team in the locker room.

"I just wanted to let everybody know the mission. It doesn't change. Darn the records – no, this is division football. This is as classic a matchup as it gets. Browns-Steelers, Thursday night," Garrett said after the game. "You can't ask for a better platform, a better time to showcase what you can do as an individual and as a team. So, just go up and recognize the opportunity and take hold of it."

Garrett and the rest of the Browns took his message to heart, fighting their way back in the fourth quarter to pull out a 24-19 win over the Steelers and improving their record to 3-8 on the season.

The Browns defensive end had one of his best games of the season, sacking QB Russell Wilson three times in the first half. It was his second three-sack game of the season, as he also had three in the first half against the Chargers in Week 9. He is the only NFL player with multiple games with at least three sacks this season, and Garrett has a total of five career games with at least three sacks.

"I wanted to make it known that I'm the guy. I'm the number one edge defender and that was the statement I was intending to make, and I think I made it," Garrett said.

The Browns defensive end now has the second-most sacks in the NFL with 10, trailing only Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson who has 11.5 sacks this year. Garrett is also the only player to record at least 10 sacks in each of the past seven seasons from 2018-24.

The three sacks that got him to 10 all came at key points in the first half.

His first came on the Steelers' opening drive of the game. Wilson had led his offense to the Browns 32-yard line, facing third-and-3. Garrett brought Wilson down from behind for a loss of eight yards, and K Chris Boswell missed the following field goal as the Steelers remained scoreless.

His second sack of the game was paired with a forced fumble that led the Browns to a successful field goal attempt to build on their first half lead. His third came as the Steelers were attempting to score in the final minute of the first half, effectively ending the half after bringing Wilson down.

"He just knew this matchup. He knew that we needed him. We needed the big guys, and he certainly came through," head coach Kevin Stefanski said after the game.

While the Browns defense allowed the Steelers to score 13 points in the fourth quarter and regain the lead, their performance on third and fourth downs proved the difference in the game.

On their second drive, the Browns forced a turnover on downs after Garrett and S Grant Delpit brought QB Justin Fields down for a loss of 2 yards. On the Steelers' first drive of the second half, DT Maurice Hurst II tackled RB Jaylen Warren for a 1-yard loss on fourth down, ending their drive.

"It was huge. It was monumental in the game. Keeping them from extending drives on fourth-and-1's, fourth-and-2's," Garrett said. "Getting those short fields for our offense and just chipping away and either you score or continue to create short fields to eventually put the ball in, I think that's what won the game for us."

Despite the win, Garrett was quick to point out the importance of staying focused on improving.

"We want to win. We're not playing for any consolation, no picks. We want to go out there and put our foot on everybody's throat. So, we're trying to carry this momentum throughout the season," Garrett said. "But guys have to take this one in, take that 24-hour rule, watch the film, dump it and then go on to the next one."

The Browns will travel to Denver to take on the Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 13 before traveling to face the Steelers once again, this time in Pittsburgh.

Garrett's upcoming rematch with the division rival was one reason he was hesitant to describe why he felt he was able to find success on Thursday night.

"Well, I actually can't tell you because it might be used against me next time," Garrett said. "We see them in two weeks. So, let me go ahead and say it was tough, and let's just keep it at that."
