Myles Garrett looking to pressure Lamar Jackson in Week 8 matchup

Garrett has the fifth-most quarterback pressures this season with 33

Myles Garrett Feature Ravens Week 8

DE Myles Garrett is well aware of the challenges the Browns face when they take on the 5-2 Ravens in Week 8.

It will be Garrett's 11th time facing off against a Ravens team led by QB Lamar Jackson, a quarterback Garrett is 4-6 against all time and has sacked eight times.

This time, however, the Ravens will feature a new offensive weapon in RB Derrick Henry. Henry faced off against the Browns last season when he was with the Titans and was held to just 20 yards on 11 carries.

"We're combining two game plans," Garrett said on Friday. "Same game plan we have for keeping Lamar – containing the pass game and running downfield – have to combine that with what we used against [Derrick] Henry. So, it's going to be a challenge. Both of those guys are exceptional and playing at a high level right now. So, we just have to execute."

Jackson and Henry have combined for 35 runs for 10 or more yards, 15 more than the next-highest quarterback-running back duo of Commanders QB Jayden Daniels and RB Brian Robinson Jr.

Preventing big plays will be a top priority for the defense, as Garrett said that just one or two explosive plays can have a large impact on the outcome of the game.

"You have to play every play throughout the game with that 100 percent effort, not knowing if that play is going to be, ultimately, the play that made or broke the game for you," Garrett said.

Garrett has a habit of making game-changing plays himself, leading the Browns with four sacks this season alongside fellow DE Za'Darius Smith. In addition to his sacks, Garrett's quarterback pressure rate of 19.1 percent is second to only Jets DE Will McDonald IV.

Although Garrett hasn't recorded a sack since the Browns' Week 4 loss to the Raiders, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz credited his ability to cover in the run game. Schwartz highlighted a play in the third quarter against the Bengals in which Garrett met RB Zach Moss at the line of scrimmage on third down to force a punt.

"That was a huge stop in the game. It wasn't a sack, but the play stopped the gain," Schwartz said. "So, whatever you got to do to be able to make plays. If the ball's coming out quick, not a lot of times you can do anything about that. Getting doubled, not a lot of times you can do things about that. But you can always find ways to be an impact player, and Myles has continued to do that."

Garrett's impact on the Browns is not limited to the defense. At practice this week, Garrett has gone against T Dawand Jones, who might see playing time against the Ravens as starting LT Jedrick Wills Jr. will not play with a knee injury.

The Cleveland Browns share renderings of a proposed option for a domed stadium in Brook Park as they evaluate the best path forward for the future of the stadium.

Jones has appeared in seven games this season, making five starts. Last season, he played in 11 games.

"I just want to give [Jones] the best look possible," Garrett said of his practice reps against the second-year offensive lineman. "He's going to have a challenge with some of the guys over there, so I want to give him a look of not only what I can do, but maybe things he might face when he gets out there and gets those looks."

Garrett said that going against the big-bodied Jones, who stands at 6-foot-8, 374 pounds, was beneficial for both parties as Garrett prepares to match up against Ravens LT Ronnie Staley.

Staley, who hasn't allowed a sack this season, is part of a Ravens offensive line that has only let up nine total sacks – the 27th-most in the league this season.

"I always look forward to good competition, so no matter who it is. They have a solid front, and we still hold our expectations high for our pressure and sack numbers, so we look forward to getting after [Staley]," Garrett said. "But it's always a good matchup with him."
