Five players' jerseys will feature the "C" jersey patch for the 2024 season.
Joel Bitonio, Myles Garrett, Charley Hughlett, Denzel Ward and Deshaun Watson were all voted team captains by their teammates. Head coach Kevin Stefanski announced the captains following Thursday's practice.
"It's a great honor for those guys," Stefanski said. "Deshaun is the quarterback, obviously, he's been doing this his whole life. Leading is very natural for him. And his teammates, again, they recognize hard work. I think that's a big piece of it."
Four of the five captains served in the role for the 2023 season, with the new being Ward.
"I think he leads in his own way," Stefanski said of Ward. "He's a great example of a guy that just does it the right way all the time. Was here all offseason, didn't miss I don't think a thing – a lift, a meeting, a practice. And I think his teammates notice that."
It's also the first time Ward has been a captain, both in the NFL and during his collegiate career at Ohio State. However, Ward has always tried to embody being a leader for both the cornerback room and all of his teammates.
"I feel very proud to be a captain," Ward said. "I always came in trying to be a captain and trying to lead these guys as best way as I can. And I definitely feel that I've grown vocally and just trying to help build the team up and build myself up. So, I'm just trying to do anything I can to help this team."
