Jerry Jeudy participates in individual drills for 1st time of training camp

DE Za’Darius Smith also returned to practice after missing two straight days

Jerry Jeudy 8-01

WR Jerry Jeudy participated in individual drills on Thursday for the first time of training camp on the Browns' second day of padded practices at The Greenbrier.

Jeudy has been dealing with a minor injury, and head coach Kevin Stefanski said he had been impressed with what he saw from the four-year pro as he worked to return to the practice field.

"He's done a great job in walkthroughs and meetings," Stefanski said. "Very, very in-tune, very intelligent football player. So, of course you want your players out there ASAP and throw everybody out there, but the reality is you have to trust in the medical staff here."

DE Za'Darius Smith also returned to practice Thursday after missing two days. DT Shelby Harris missed his second straight practice.

Earlier in the morning, the Browns placed LB Charlie Thomas III on the reserve/injured list and signed LB Caleb Johnson, who spent the spring with the Browns before being waived in late July.

"I'm excited about what he brings to the room," Stefanski said. "Tough kid, smart, so I'm excited that he's back."

DE Myles Garrett is also expected to return to full strength soon. Stefanski noted that because the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year was not on any official injury designation lists, he has been able to come in and out of drills or walkthroughs as he works to get back to form.

Thursday's padded practice gives players another chance to play closer to full speed as the Browns coaching staff continues to work through install.

"It's a continuation of what we've been doing, a ramp up into getting ready for the season," Stefanski said before practice. "So now, second day in pads for us, a few more team drills going against each other. So, we naturally expect these to be competitive and to push each other but there's still a lot that both sides, offense, defense, special teams, that we're continuing to install."
