QB Jameis Winston set a Browns franchise record in Week 13 against the Broncos when he threw for 497 passing yards, breaking the previous record of 457 passing yards set by QB Josh McCown in 2015.

However, while he threw four touchdown passes, Winston also threw three interceptions in the loss, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Despite the three-interception performance, Winston is determined to have a short memory as he prepares to take on the Steelers in Week 14.

"You can't go into a game thinking about turnovers," Winston said. "The only thing you can do is go into the game focusing on protecting the football. There are certain things that we focus on as an offense: zero giveaways and making sure that we're winning the turnover margin. That's our focus. I don't focus on little things about myself. I focus on technique. I focus on one play at a time. And I focus on being the best teammate that I can be in leading these guys to a win."

In his five games as the Browns starting quarterback, Winston has thrown 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. In two of his five starts, against the Chargers in Week 9 and against the Broncos in Week 13, Winston has thrown three interceptions.

Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey said while a lot goes into the process of correcting mistakes that lead to turnovers, Winston's accountability gives Dorsey confidence in his ability to improve.

"Jameis is the first one to admit that and part of that is technique, part of that is everybody doing their job and part of that is decision making," Dorsey said. "So, there's different things that go into those things. But at the end of the day, the quarterback has the ultimate responsibility for it, and we'll keep making sure to work to improve that."

A key to the Browns earning their second win over the Steelers this season will be eliminating turnovers. Winston is 2-1 as a starter this season when throwing one or fewer interceptions and 0-2 when throwing multiple interceptions.

However, Winston's style of play is also a large part of the Browns' offensive success while he's been the signal caller. With a strong arm that can target all areas of the field, Winston has completed 20 passes for 20 or more yards this season.

"There's a lot of difficult throws in this league and I think the advantage that Jameis gives you is it does force a defense to cover the whole field," Dorsey said. "They can't play between the hashes. They can't play into the boundary. We want to be able to attack the whole field but do it in a smart way and a judicious way."

Winston also mentioned the word "smart" when addressing the media ahead of the Browns' matchup against the Steelers, saying part of the Browns' offensive philosophy is to play "smart, not conservative."

Taking what the defense allows elevates the importance of fundamentals and execution, according to Winston. On two of his interceptions against the Broncos, the opportunity to make a play was there, but Winston was unable to execute.

"It's more important to take care of the ball than sometimes make that huge play. But, when the play presents itself, we make the play," Winston said. "And I think in Monday night's case, the plays presented themselves – particularly the last two [interceptions] on the last [two drives]. The plays were there, I just didn't make the play. So, analyzing that, I'm going to make the play when it's time to make the play."

Protecting the football will continue to be important in Week 14, particularly against a Steelers defense that is tied for the league lead with 12 fumble recoveries and has the fourth-most interceptions with 13.

While he will be focused on making smart decisions with the football and avoiding turnovers, Winston said that the best way to play good football is to clear his mind and continue being himself.

"Having a heightened awareness that this is a great team, this is a great defense," Winston said on facing the Steelers. "Just having a heightened awareness when I'm in the pocket and just going out there and just playing. I love this game and it's more about the game and just snapping and clearing and having fun. Doing what God has blessed me to do."
