How will the Browns defense combat the Eagles offense? | Browns Mailbag

Staff Writer Kelsey Russo answers your questions

Browns Mailbag 10.9

The Browns will wrap up a three-game road stretch when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in Week 6.

As the Browns look to get back in the win column, there are a number of different questions surrounding the first portion of the 2024 season. So, we opened up the mailbag and answered some questions.

How do you envision the Browns defense combatting the Eagles offense with Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the return this week of receivers AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith from injury? – Darnell J., Cleveland, Ohio

The Eagles offense has different threats both in the run and the pass game that the Browns defense will have to account for.

Their run defense will have to limit RB Saquon Barkley's success in the run game. This season, Barkley has rushed for 435 rushing yards on 73 carries and four touchdowns. The Browns have allowed an average of 141.6 rushing yards per game through the first five weeks of the season.

Then, in the pass game, the Browns have to pressure QB Jalen Hurts and cover his pass catchers. Hurts has thrown for 930 yards on 90 completions and four touchdowns. However, Hurts has struggled under pressure this season. He's taken 13 sacks this season, tied for 11th most in the league, and has a 46.2 completion percentage. Hurts has thrown two touchdowns and two interceptions with a 66.7 passer rating when under pressure.

"He's outstanding," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "Having watched a lot of his games and just seeing how he operates, he's a threat in multitude of ways; can make every throw, has made every throw, hey have talented players on the perimeter, they have a talented tight end, he's a part of their RPO game. When it's not there, he can pull it down and run. So, he just operates really well. Whether it's pressure, no pressure, he sees it clearly is a very talented young man."

The Browns defense has totaled 14 sacks for a loss of 79 yards this season. They will have to apply pressure on Hurts to force him into situations, as he has totaled five fumbles and four interceptions this season.

Why do some (or one) Browns players have a cloth covered helmet? – Steve K., Leander, Texas

LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is one of the Browns players that has a helmet with a cover over it because he is wearing the Guardian Cap on his helmet this season. Players have the choice to wear the cap over their helmets during games, and if so, they have a cover to match the helmet of the team.

Owusu-Koramoah was asked ahead of Week 3 against the Giants about his decision to wear the Guardians Cap this season.

"I think I was more curious than anything," Owusu-Koramoah said. "I know that it's something that we can wear. I believe I did wear another cap the first time, the first game I had a different one - not that cap, the helmet. I had another helmet the first game. And I wanted to like get in there and absolutely feel nothing, and to be honest, I had a good time."

While Owusu-Koramoah said the cap is heavy, he'll continue to wear it throughout the season.

"Yeah, of course the focus is the here and the now," Owusu-Koramoah said. "But we also as men, as people, as humans we have to plan for the future and things like that. So, I think part of wearing the Guardian Cap, part of that was the decision to make sure I can find ways to preserve myself at the highest capacity."
