David Bell's hip injury to require surgery | News & Notes

Pierre Strong Jr. considered week to week with a hamstring injury

News&Notes 9.16

As the Browns review the game film from their win in Week 2 and begin preparation for Week 3 against the Giants, head coach Kevin Stefanski reflected on the Browns 18-13 victory over the Jaguars.

"It wasn't perfect, wasn't always pretty, but it was gritty," Stefanski said. "And I thought the guys found a way there. And it's certainly a learning experience. I think Win, lose or draw, you gotta learn from these things."

Here are the top news and notes heading into Week 3.

David Bell's dislocated hip to require surgery

WR David Bell, who was carted off the field in Sunday's game against the Jaguars with a hip injury, sustained a dislocated hip that will require surgery, Stefanski said on Monday. Stefanski also confirmed that it is likely a season-ending injury for Bell.

Bell finished with three receptions for 27 yards, and Stefanski said he gave Bell a game ball for his performance on Sunday.

"So, feel badly for David," Stefanski said. "I know his teammates feel badly for him, but he'll bounce back. But he's a guy that's a big part of this football team. He'll be here, I'm sure, as he rehabs, and can provide that steady hand as well, even just in this building."

Injury Updates

RB Pierre Strong Jr., who sustained a hamstring injury during the third quarter against the Jaguars, is considered week to week. Strong finished with one reception for 10 yards and one carry for a loss of five yards against the Jaguars.

DE Ogbo Okoronkwo, who was evaluated for a concussion on Sunday, was cleared from the concussion protocol.

TE David Njoku continues to work through the ankle injury. Stefanski said they will evaluate his progress throughout the week and is not ruled out yet for Week 3 against the Giants.

RT Jack Conklin and LT Jedrick Wills Jr. both have the chance to play this week, Stefanski said.

Penalty issues continue

The Browns continued to struggle with penalties in Week 2, as they had a total of 13 penalties for a loss of 100 yards. They had eight offensive penalties, four defensive penalties and one special teams penalty.

Stefanski said that with the pre-snap motion and shifts in the offense, they have to make it a point of emphasis to not commit the penalty in order to keep the Browns from playing behind the sticks. They saw how they negatively affected the game in Week 1 and forced them into a handful of difficult offensive situations in Week 2.

"We need to be better in that area," Stefanski said. "It's hard to win. We don't need to make it harder on ourselves, and we did in a bunch of areas. So, we can just identify and correct. We'll keep hammering it. And until we do it, we're just going to make life hard, and we don't want to do that."
