Browns close out the season with a 35-10 loss to the Ravens

Takeaways 1.4.25

The Browns saw their 2024 season come to an end with their 35-10 loss to the Ravens in Baltimore.

"Obviously disappointed in the outcome," head coach Kevin Stefanski said. "Really proud of a bunch of guys that were put in some spots to go battle, and they did that. But ultimately, certainly not good enough when you don't come away with the win."

Here are three takeaways from Saturday's loss.

Browns use both quarterbacks early before sticking with Bailey Zappe

After QB Bailey Zappe was announced as the starter on Saturday, the Browns used a combination of Zappe and Dorian Thompson-Robinson at quarterback early in the game, as Thompson-Robinson played one series.

Stefanski said he wanted to get Thompson-Robinson in the game and make his decision based on the game progressed. He ultimately stuck with Zappe for the remainder of the game.

"He told us during the week that we'd both get to play at some point and time," Zappe said. "Obviously, there was a string there where we were moving the ball, and we were playing well as an offense. I'm sure he didn't want to mess up the rhythm. He was honest with us, he obviously did not know how the game was going to go, and he was just going to go off his decisions or however he thought."

Zappe had some early struggles, as the Browns were forced into a three-and-out situation on the first offensive drive. Zappe then threw an interception which was returned 26 yards for the pick 6.

"Obviously made a poor decision there with the interception that turned into six points for them," Stefanski said. "I thought he bounced back for the most part and made some good throws. Obviously, have to learn from all these games, learn from all these reps.

Yet, Zappe also led the Browns on drives down the field into the red zone in the second quarter. While they were not able to find the end zone, K Dustin Hopkins made a 23-yard field goal for the first points for Cleveland.

Zappe started the second half for the Browns, and Cleveland stuck with Zappe throughout the second half. They were forced into two three-and-out situations in the third quarter. However, Zappe continued to connect with his pass catchers and moved the ball downfield. They scored their first touchdown of the day early in the fourth quarter when Zappe connected with TE Jordan Akins on a 16-yard pass in the end zone.

Zappe finished the game completing 16 of 31 passing attempts for 170 yards and one touchdown. He threw two interceptions, was sacked once for a loss of five yards and had a passer rating of 51.8.

"I thought he settled in there a little bit," Stefanski said. "(On the) first play the game, made a really nice throw. It was a good read and exactly what he's supposed to do. So, there were some moments, but all these moments he has to learn from."

Browns defense slows down the Ravens before faltering late

The Browns defense found ways to limit the success of the Ravens in both the run and the pass game in the first half. They gave up just one touchdown on a 12-yard reception to TE Mark Andrews in the second quarter.

Cleveland forced Baltimore to punt on their first offensive drive and forced three turnovers on downs in the first half. The Ravens attempted two fourth-down attempts but were unable to convert. S Grant Delpit was credited with the quarterback hit on QB Lamar Jackson in the first quarter that led to an incomplete pass, while CB Cameron Mitchell recorded the pass defensed on a pass intended for Andrews that led to the turnover on downs.

However, the defense started to sputter in the second half.

The Browns defense gave up another touchdown early in the third quarter as Jackson connected with Andrews for a 7-yard touchdown. They bounced back with another three-and-out situation after a Ravens fourth-down attempt was stalled by a delay of game penalty that pushed the Ravens back and they were forced to punt.

The Browns defense gave up their third touchdown in the fourth quarter after the Ravens marched down the field and RB Derrick Henry rushed for two yards into the end zone. The final scoring drive of the game came when Henry broke through and ran for 43 yards for the fourth touchdown of the day.

"I thought they were battling," Stefanski said. "We put them in some really tough spots. (We) didn't do a great job on teams units a couple times there when they got the ball in plus territory. We had a turnover on downs where they got the ball in plus territory. So, we did not put them in some advantageous field position, but I think they battled."

The Browns gave up a total of 437 total net yards, with an average gain of 6.5 yards. Cleveland's defense gave up 220 net rushing yards and 217 net passing yards/ They allowed the Ravens to convert on 7 of 14 third down attempts. Jackson finishing the game completing 16 of 32 passing attempts for 217 yards and two touchdowns.

WR Jerry Jeudy breaks Browns record

WR Jerry Jeudy ended his first season in Cleveland by breaking a franchise record in Week 18. With his six receptions against the Ravens, Jeudy set a new franchise record for the most receptions by a Brown in a single season with 90. He surpassed former TE Ozzie Newsome, who held the record for 89 receptions in a single season.

Jeudy finished the season with 90 receptions for 1,229 receiving yards and four touchdowns. His receiving yards were also the fifth-most receiving yards by a Brown in a season.

"Obviously, Jerry made some big plays for us towards the end there to move the football," Stefanski said. "I thought him getting that record is indicative of his play this season. He deserved it."

Heading into Week 18, Jeudy knew he was close to the record. During the fourth quarter, they told Jeudy he needed just two more catches to break the record. So, in the fourth quarter, they made a concerted effort to target Jeudy.

Jeudy had back-to-back catches that helped him break the record late in the fourth quarter. The first came on a 30-yard completion. The next came on short pass from Zappe for four yards, officially giving him 90 receptions for the 2024 season.

"It means a lot," Jeudy said. "Even though we didn't have the season that we wanted, still thankful for the coaching staff for giving me this opportunity to break one of the records."
