BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns on Monday signed unrestricted free agent DB Aaron Berry. General Manager Ray Farmer made the announcement.
"Aaron Berry gives us both depth and competition at corner, and has the potential to upgrade our kicking game," Farmer said. "He's tough and relentless and his strength prior to his injury was man coverage. He's also accountable for his past, which is well-documented.
"We recognize that he's had missteps, as does he. Before and after that adverse period in his life, members of our coaching staff and players in our locker room worked with Aaron. From a communication standpoint, there's a degree of comfort we have with him, and a degree of comfort he'll have with the Browns. He has a chance to earn the opportunity to contribute to any success we'll have this fall."
Berry is a 5-9, 190-pound veteran entering his fifth NFL season out of Pittsburgh. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Detroit, Berry has appeared in 19 games with four starts. He played two seasons (2010-11) with the Lions before signing with the Jets in 2012. He has registered 28 tackles, 12 passes defensed and one interception.
Berry suffered an injury during training camp in 2013 and missed the entire season after appearing in seven games in 2012.
A two-time All-Big East honoree, Berry started 33 of his 48 games at Pitt and recorded 93 tackles, 27 passes defensed, six interceptions and two sacks. A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Berry attended Bishop McDevitt High School.
