Browns look to limit Jayden Daniels' offensive success | Keys to the Game

Browns will look to improve their pass game in Week 5 against the Commanders

Keys to the Game Wk 5

The Browns continue their road game stretch as they travel to Washington to face the Commanders in Week 5. They will look to get back in the win column on Sunday.

Here are three keys to Sunday's game.

Limit QB Jayden Daniels

Commanders rookie QB Jayden Daniels has been off to a strong start in his first four weeks of the season, leading the Commanders to a 3-1 start. Daniels has an 82.1 completion percentage through his first four games, as he's completed 87 of his 106 passing attempts for 897 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also has a passer rating of 107.4.

Daniels has also led the Commanders on 23 scoring drives – including 16 consecutive drives excluding kneel downs – and 19 incomplete passes and four punts in the first four weeks.

"He just has really good command," defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. "They've punted four times in four games, two games haven't punted. I mean, that'll get your attention really quickly. He's been very efficient with the ball. He really understands the RPO zone read world. It's something he's done. Played a lot of college football in a very similar situation. So, you see that comes up, and his legs make a difference."

Schwartz said one of their areas of focus during the week was on third downs, which Daniels has converted a high percentage of third-down attempts on scrambles. The Commanders have converted on 23 of 43 third-down attempts, which led the NFL heading into Week 5.

"So, it just adds a little bit more and he hasn't made mistakes with the football," Schwartz said. "He's playing really well for a rookie. We got to play tight coverage. We got to be in our gaps, and we have to tackle well on the perimeter, and they'll challenge all of those things."

Create completions in the passing game

While the Browns have struggled to establish consistency in the passing game – as QB Deshaun Watson has yet to throw for 200 passing yards in a game this season – the Browns have a chance to build a base for the offense in in Week 5.

The Browns have an opportunity offensively to take advantage in the passing game, as the Commanders give up on average 7.9 yards per passing attempt – ranked 29th in the league.

Stefanski said as an offensive unit, they have to be more efficient and explosive in the pass game. Through the first four weeks of the season, the Browns are averaging 151.5 passing yards per game and 4.9 yards per pass attempt.

Yet, as they work through their offensive struggles Watson feels that they have the necessary talent in the receiving corps to create those explosive plays and establish the pass game.

"I think we have a lot of great talent in that receiver room, and we have a lot of guys that have a lot of opportunities to go out there and make explosive plays," Watson said. "We got to give them chances, and once they get those chances and opportunities, then we all got to capitalize to be on the same page."

Handle the stout defensive front of the Commanders

The Browns continue to work through injuries to their offensive line – with RT Jack Conklin and LT Jedrick Wills Jr. questionable heading into Week 5 – and will face another strong test against the Commanders. Stefanski said it's a physical front that plays aggressively.

"This is an outstanding defensive front. Obviously, those two interior players are outstanding, so it's a great challenge," Stefanski said.

The Commanders have DT Daron Payne and DT Jonathan Allen on the inside and DE Clelin Ferrell and DE Dorance Armstrong on the edges, which present challenges on the front four. On the interior, Payne has recorded four tackles, two quarterback hits and a half a sack this season, while Allen has a total of nine tackles, one tackle for loss, four quarterback hits and one sack. On the outside, Armstrong has nine tackles, one tackle for loss, seven quarterback hits, two sacks and a forced fumble this season.

At linebacker, the Commanders have LB Bobby Wagner in the middle, who has recorded 1,744 tackles in his 13-year career, tied for fifth most in NFL history. This season, Wagner has recorded 38 tackles, five tackles for loss, one quarterback hit, one pass defensed and a half a sack.

Offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey noted the effort Washington's front gives in each fame, which will require the Browns offensive line to use their technique, effort and strain to block against their defensive front.
