Browns interview Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus for head coach

The Browns on Sunday interviewed Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus for the team's head coach opening.

Eberflus, whose defense limited the Texans to just seven points in Saturday's AFC Wild Card win, is the sixth candidate to interview. Gregg Williams -- who was the Browns' interim head coach during the second half of the 2018 season -- interviewed Tuesday, former NFL coach Jim Caldwell interviewed Wednesday, Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski interviewed Thursday, Saints assistant head coach/tight ends Dan Campbell interviewed Friday and Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores interviewed Saturday.

Eberflus helped guide the Colts to one of the biggest improvements by any defense in the NFL this season. Indianapolis went from 30th in total defense in 2017 to 11th in 2018. The Colts made an even bigger jump in scoring defense, going from 30th to 10th.

A Toledo native and University of Toledo alum, Eberflus spent the first 17 years at the collegiate level before getting his first NFL opportunity with the Browns in 2009. Eberflus coached the team's linebackers for two seasons under head coach Eric Mangini.

Eberflus moved on to the Cowboys in 2011 and ultimately spent seven years in Dallas. A linebackers coach during his entire tenure, Eberflus added the title of passing game coordinator in 2016, giving him extra time and opportunities to meet with the team's linebackers and defensive backs to go over coverage plans against upcoming opponents.

Eberflus worked underneath his mentor, Gary Pinkel, from 1992-2008, going from Toledo to Missouri in 2001. A position coach throughout his time at Toledo, Eberflus was elevated to defensive coordinator at Missouri and held the position for eight seasons.
