The Browns selected Louisiana-Monroe defensive back Trey Caldwell on Saturday with their second of two fifth-round compensatory picks.
Caldwell (No. 173) is the 13th player to be selected by the Browns in the 2016 NFL Draft. He joins Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman (No. 15), Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah (No. 32), Penn State defensive end Carl Nassib (No. 65), Auburn offensive tackle Shon Coleman (No. 76) and USC quarterback Cody Kessler (No. 93), Wisconsin linebacker Joe Schobert (No. 99), Auburn wide receiver Ricardo Louis (No. 114), TCU defensive back Derrick Kindred (No. 129), Princeton tight end Seth DeValve (No. 138), UCLA wide receiver Jordan Payton (No. 154), Baylor offensive tackle Spencer Drango (No. 168) and Colorado State wide receiver Rashard Higgins as the newest Brown.
Caldwell, a 5-foot-9, 186-pound defensive back, made 143 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions in four seasons at Louisiana-Monroe.
The Richardson, Texas, native was named to the Sun Belt honorable mention team in 2014.
Caldwell joins a Browns secondary in need of depth following the departures of safeties Donte Whitner and Tashuan Gipson and as Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden recovers from ankle surgery.
