BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns on Thursday agreed to terms with kicker Billy Cundiff on a contract extension. Cundiff was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent when his current contract expired on Tuesday.
Cundiff, a 6-1, 212-pound veteran entering his ninth NFL season out of Drake, converted 21 of 26 field-goal attempts (80.8 percent) and was perfect on 32 extra-point attempts while appearing in all 16 games with the Browns in 2013. He also set franchise records with 42 touchbacks and a career-best 67.7 touchback percentage (42 of 62) last season.
A first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection in 2010, Cundiff has appeared in 122 career regular-season contests. He has connected on 160 of 210 (76.2 percent) career field-goal attempts and 249 of 250 (99.6 percent) extra points. He has scored 729 career points in the regular season and owns a career-long field goal of 56 yards. In postseason play, Cundiff is 12 of 14 (85.7 percent) on field goals and 14 of 14 on extra points.
On Sept. 3, Cundiff re-joined the Browns, where he appeared in five games in 2009. During that season, he made all four field-goal tries, including an 18-yard game-winning field goal with 22 seconds remaining in a 6-3 victory over Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Cundiff was originally signed by Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2002 and spent four seasons (2002-05) with the Cowboys. He has also appeared in games with New Orleans (2006), Baltimore (2009-11) and Washington (2012). He spent the 2013 preseason with the New York Jets, where he connected on all three of his field-goal attempts. He was waived on Aug. 28.
Cundiff set 15 school records at Drake and seven Pioneer Football League records during his collegiate career. He also played three years on the school's basketball team. Cundiff attended Harlan Community High School in Harlan, Iowa.
