The Browns are just one day away from the start of training camp, which will kick off with their trip to The Greenbrier. To prepare for training camp, we're putting together a preview of each position on the roster. Let's wrap up the series with a look at the specialists.
The Specialists:
Dustin Hopkins
Cade York
Charley Hughlett
Corey Bojorquez
What we know: The Browns kept their core specialists together after a successful 2023 season, re-signing Bojorquez in free agency to a two-year deal and extending Hopkins for three seasons. Both Bojorquez and Hopkins have their share of accomplishments in their time in Cleveland.
Bojorquez consistently flipped the field, pinning opposing offenses in tough field position. He set the Browns single season punt average in each of his two seasons since joining the team as an unrestricted free agent in 2022. Bojorquez also finished the 2023 season with 87 punts for 4,294 yards, with his longest punt for 73 yards and had 31 punts inside the 20-yard line. His 4,294 punt yards also ranked fourth in the NFL last season. In his two seasons with the Browns, Bojorquez has record 148 punts for 7,253 yards.
Hopkins set a Browns record for most field goals in a season by a Brown by making 33 of his 36 field goals. He also finished second to Jim Brown for most points scored by a Brown in a season with 123, as Brown finished with 126 in 1965. He also set other records with his 50-plus yard field goals. His eight 50-plus yard field goals set a record for the Browns, and he set an NFL record with at least one 50-plus yard field goal in five consecutive games.
They also brought back York, who they originally drafted in 2022. During his rookie season, York made 24-of-32 field goal attempts and 35-of-37 extra points. He set Browns rookie records for points (107) and PATs (35), while finishing second for field goals made (24). His longest kick of his rookie year was a 58-yard game-winning field goal against the Panthers in Week 1. York was then cut before the 2023 season and the Browns acquired Hopkins in a trade. However, York has another chance to showcase how he can provide depth to the specialists.
The biggest question: Does York have a place on the roster? Their specialists built a level of chemistry that worked well for the unit to find the high level of success in 2023. As a unit, they worked through how to have clean looks at the ball, the quality of snaps and the holds. They experimented in the early part of the season to figure out what worked best for each of them and how they fit together to provide the best look and allow the best kick or punt.
However, after the injuries the specialists dealt with at the end of the 2023 season to Hopkins and Bojorquez, York adds depth to the unit and another option to kick if needed.

The X-Factor: Hopkins. Much like last season, Hopkins success in the kicking game will be an integral factor for the Browns overall success. Hopkins' 33 made field goals, along with a record-setting eight 50-plus yard field goals for the Browns. He totaled four game-winning field goals, which allowed the Browns to finish the 2023 season with 11 wins and a trip to the Wild Card round of the playoffs. Yet, with the new changes beginning in 2024 to kickoffs, Hopkins will also play an integral role in the success of the Browns kickoffs.
The biggest number: 33. Hopkins 33 made field goals during the 2023 season set a record for most made field goals by a Browns player, and his consistency of putting the ball through the uprights allowed the Browns to have continued success over the course of the season.
Says it all: "A guy that has come through for us when we need him, we trust him. He's been a weapon for us on kickoff as well. And then off the field, I think he just fits in really well into who we are. He's a really good person, great teammate." – head coach Kevin Stefanski on Hopkins during the 2023 season
